What Are We Waiting For?

At the risk of becoming a Cassandra, I again address the headlong plunge by America into state corporatism.  Sometimes we refuse to listen because of the source.

They already won...

Paul Craig Roberts is a character with such a many-colored coat.  He was an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Ronald Reagan, an Associate Editor at the Wall Street Journal, a much-lauded academician and researcher, and he wrote a number of books, including, Good Intentions: How Prosecutors and Bureaucrats Are Trampling the Constitution in the Name of Justice (2008).

Roberts wrote recently for on December 29th, that “Anyone who doesn’t believe that the US is an incipient fascist state needs only to consult the latest assault on civil liberties by Fox News.”  (The specific occasion is not important to this article…there are many examples to choose from.)

To put it clearly, Fox News is to the corporate state what the Ministry of Propaganda was to Nazi Germany.

It would not in the least surprise me if Rupert Murdoch was eventually appointed Propaganda Minister of Homeland Security & National Enlightenment.

For me, one of the bellwethers of being able to predict a drift toward fascism is to gauge what the social democracy party is up to.  In America, the closest we come to that (being the only industrial “democracy” in the world without a labor party), are the Democrats.

Unfortunately, even there, we’re out of luck.  Clinton moved the Party to the right (defining neo-liberalism) in 1994.  Except for some rhetoric and half-hearted attempts at social legislation, the Democrats have remained junior collaborators to the reactionary lapdogs of the growing corporate state.  Of course, hope springs eternal…

George Santayana (1863-1952) was credited with the saying, “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”  I’m sure that one of the events he was speaking to included the appeasement policy of Britain’s Neville Chamberlain toward Hitler & Co., leading up to World War-II.

Is Obama really of the opinion that the corporate elite and their representatives are playing on a level field?  I have no doubt that the conscious leadership in the true capital ship of state depends precisely on that belief.

Time is on their side.  All the time in the world…they will never quit their quest at total wealth and total power—it’s in the nature of the beast.  Every generation must struggle anew for equality of opportunity and democracy.  There are no free rides.

Do the neo-liberals believe that the deliberate bankruptcy of the economy (to corporate profit alone), the rape of the public treasury and gov’t services, the planned destruction of all unions, the impoverishment of the working and middle classes, the elimination of public education, social security, healthcare, ad nauseam, is all some kind of event “we can work with?”  With which “we can ‘compromise’?”

If not now, when?  As asked in the title:  What are we waiting for?
