Human Rights Watch: Aging Prisoners…

Human Rights Watch just came out with a 104-pg report, “Old Behind Bars: The Aging Prison Population in the United States.”

The corporate media focuses on health costs and –God forbid—the possibility that states might have to release inmates early. I have a somewhat different take…

For anyone who’s done time, we know what prisons are all about: retribution and punishment. Period. more…

The Prison Time Machine…

This week’s Online New Yorker magazine features excellent commentary on mass incarceration by Adam Gopnik, “The Caging of America.”

The author well captures the reality of American prisons as time machines and warehouses of “the lock and the clock.” He also offers several causative factors that resonate with my own conclusions.

When Reagan came to Washington in 1980 there were 220 souls imprisoned for every 100,000 people in the US. Today, that number is 743 and climbing. The US, while having only 5% of the world population, contains 25% of all prisoners on earth. more…

Good Kops vs. Bad Kops: The 1% Solution…

No one can say that I’ve not been blessed with a variety of acquaintances and circumstances throughout my life. Two of them are Michael and Robert Meeropol, the sons of Julius & Ethel Rosenberg, murdered by the state as Soviet spies in 1953.

Julius & Ethel Rosenberg

The release of hundreds of thousands of gov’t papers since, document that, indeed, they were both ardent members of the CPUSA (allies to the US during WW-II). Julius (37) was an electrical engineer and Ethel (Greenglass, 35) was a union organizer. They lived in NYC.

They were both scapegoats of the anti-communist hysteria whipped up by J. Edgar Hoover and Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-WI). Somebody had to be publicly burned at the stake for the Soviet’s developing their own atomic bomb (1949). more…

Social History: 99% & 1%…

“One class-conscious prisoner is worth 1,000 lawyers.”

Twenty-years in federal prison tends to give a person a certain je ne sais quoi into crime, law, and state control. Since extended tribal families were formed some 10,000+Y.A., associations of humans have come to general agreement that certain common laws are needed.

Anthony V. Mangione, ICE

Initially, I surmise that these social agreements tended to centralize around common issues of physical predation. Family-society came to generally view murder, assault and theft as such universal crimes. more…

Courts, Corporatists & Other Criminals…

While the corporate media distracts the public with their trick-bag of dysfunctional Republican idiots, aka candidates, the US Supreme Court pulled off another three-card monte.

In a devilish compromise, the Court unanimously instructed a lower court in Texas to “take another look” at the Texas Legislator’s redistricting maps (favoring Republicans).

The Texas court had redrawn the Congressional voting maps in line with the Census count (as required by the Constitution).

That remapping included fair representation by the affected Hispanic communities. The USSC effectively killed that plan. more…

NDAA & SOPA: Another Milestone on the Road to Corporate Fascism…

Hans Post, the grandfather of Australia’s peace movement, warns in a recent web message that it’s long past “time that we all really wake up before it’s too late.”

He’s specifically referring to Congress’s current foray into anti-democratic legislation, to wit: The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). more…

Commentary: Political Consciousness…

When I was first asked for my opinion of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement last October, I responded that the most significant factor was their central issue of 99% vs. 1%, and that this was, objectively, an anti-capitalist call.

She replied that she didn’t think that the OWS movement was making such a lofty statement nor that such would development.

“We’ll see,” I said, but also thought, That’s the difference between subjective and objective analysis. more…

9/11 & Conservative Freaks…

“Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”   Ben Franklin

On 9/11, as the rest of the world was learning of the Saudi-Wahhabist terror attack in NYC, I was taken from the federal prison factory at FCI Jesup, Georgia, and locked down incommunicado in the punitive isolation “hole” for the next 50 days.

Just business...

That was only one minor beginning of the power-security grab and the Patriot Act that was enacted by the Bush-Cheney criminal administration (and continues to this day). more…

Social Consciousness…

People acculturate normally into our respective societies thru family, peers, schools and nation. We tend to accept the broad systemic beliefs and behaviors of what we’ve observed, been taught and told.

These beliefs and attitudes are borne thru early formative psycho-social development. Basic identification with certain morals, values and ideals serve to determine how we later relate to and define social, political and psychological events. Thus is life… more…

Rick Santorum: Inquisition Man…

If an archetype did not exist for a grown man twisted from the roots of shame, guilt and conservative hypocrisy, we might have to invent him. However, such is not the case; Richard John “Rick the Rooster” Santorum, 53, already exists.

Mitt Romney is a corporate zealot seeking to fill his father’s underpants. Newt Gingrich is an old-timey corrupt politician. Rick Perry is a frustrated Texan gaucho. Ron Paul is a racist-nativist cum faux-populist, and Michelle Bachmann is her own caricature of a female (circa the 18th century-or-so).

Ol’ Rick is the genuine article: A stone cold Conquerer Worm…straight from the hell of the Vatican-Inquisitional archives, or so he chooses. more…
