Marijuana & Criminal Justice…

With over 2.5 million souls incarcerated in the American gulag, 1-in-8 prisoners are locked up for a marijuana-related offense.  Some 52% all toll are imprisoned for drug convictions.

Los Angeles Medicine…

The overwhelming majority of prisoners in America are not doing time for predatory criminal actions, but for “crimes” that are created by religious and conservative sensibilities—hypocrisies, truth be told.

The citizens of America are treated as children to control their consensual habits and desires. more…

Rights vs. Reality…

I admit I get a chuckle when I hear some blockhead explain how certain constitutional rights handcuff the police from doing their job.

Let’s take one easy example, the Miranda v. Arizona (1966) decision.  The Supreme Court saw the need for police to inform suspects (that’s potentially all of us) of certain basic rights, such as, the right to remain silent and the right to counsel.  Sounds easy enough, eh?

In 1963 I was returning to my wife and children in Nashville, TN, from New York.  I was driving my 1960 Plymouth Fury with all my personal possessions, including my family photo albums. more…

Social Security & Social Predators…

All prisoners must undergo a pre-release program as they’re getting ready to exit prison.  This includes a variety of classes on psychology, drugs, and employment programs.

Retirement Insurance Program

Prisoners must also get their ID…a birth certificate, a driver’s license, and a Social Security card.  This includes a request to Social Security for one’s personal earnings and benefits status.

Since the average federal inmate is 39, and over 70% are serving 5 yrs and more with some 52% on drug charges, it’s been my experience that many of these men have a significant work history. more…

Kops & Kowboys…

A BOP lieutenant listening to me speak with a group of prisoners commented, “You know what Jesse Jackson once told a black audience?  He said, ‘You know what the most dangerous threat is to a black man walking down the street?  Another black man!’”

Kop Land Day Dreams...

I recall replying, “You know what the most dangerous threat is to a cop responding to a potential crime scene?  Another cop!”  The lieutenant left to go bother someone else.

Fortunately for the police, they usually know each other.  But when they don’t… more…

America, Inc….

If the facts in this article weren’t true, the story would be totally silly.  I guess it is, anyways.

Dreams of Empire...

If you’re in prison and not guilty of a predatory crime (murder, kidnapping, robbery, assault, rape, fraud of persons, etc.), and you wonder why many of the so-called free world crooks are getting away with far more than you ever dreamed of, well here’s some info for you…

You see, the company (excuse me), country, is being reorganized along more corporate-friendly lines.  That is, corporate-crooks rather than your common every-day variety.  But don’t expect to find many of them as your future cellmates; they own the system. more…

21st Century Neo-Fascism…

The following “left-wing rant” is inspired by the in-credibly “successful” right-wing rants of Glenn Beck & CoSomebody must be listening to these whackos…

One of the many acquaintances I’ve developed over my past 20+ years in federal prison, one I wrote a book review for, Hans Post, One man in His Time (2002), is a former decorated Waffen SS soldier who served a number of years as a prisoner of the French, Americans, and Germans after WW-II.

Col. Otto Skorzeny

On first blush, Hans Post would hardly be the sort of historical figure I’d take a shine to.  Members of fascist organizations in my book would be right up there with the klan, slavers, settler-occupiers, nativists, Tea-Bagger Republicans, and other assorted flotsam of humanity.

But Hans provides a phenomenal example of where one can come from, go to, and give hope to the rest of us… more…

Rock Beyond Belief…

Bigotry and religiosity are handmaidens in a desert of ignorance.  The ability of humans to believe in their “superiority” and rank superstitions is phenomenal.

In prison we run into this mental aberration all the time.  Such beliefs are a source of solace for some along with attempts to make sense of their condition.

Often, soon given their reversion to old ways, it’s clear many are trying to scam the system for favors, privileges and other considerations…such as early release. more…

Obama’s Corporate Nemesis…

(Prelude…)   There was an audible gasp in the private room by several of the Republican gubernatorial candidates.  Tim Phillips, director of Americans For Prosperity, a front for the multi-billionaire Koch Brothers, continued,  “You heard it right.  This is a capitalist nation, not a nanny-state for lazy and homeless bums.

Obama, Inc?

The Democratic Party represents the interests of welfare cheats and surplus laborers.  They’re propped in power by unions that have usurped their role from honest, hard-working entrepreneurs.

“It’s time we take that power back.  Starting after this election, we will crush the financial backbone of the Democrats…the unions.  There are only two parties that we need in America:  Those that earned it, the corporations, and you, their Republican representatives.”

Voice in the audience:  “And what if they stir up a strong backlash, like we see in the Mid-East?”

Phillips:  “No problem.  Then the Democrats can fulfill their true role…compromise and surrender.  Either way, we win!”

Propaganda & Prisoners…

When I heard about nine children being “mistakenly” killed in Afghanistan, I first thought of a drone or helicopter attack with rockets.

The article cited a “Pentagon spokesperson” describing an accident by “NATO helicopters.”  I knew that was a deflection (NATO?  From what country?  NATO isn’t an independent force), but didn’t give it much consideration at the time.

How many times over the past 20+ years in prison have I read of an incident that I was witness to where the truth was almost never told?  A “prison spokesman” opining a believeable and convenient reason…burying the reality. more…

Compromise & Surrender…

Is the President of the United States, Barack Obama–with a history of some street/community organizing creds–really that stupid?

Fresh news...

I realize that, at heart, he’s a neo-liberal ideologically not much removed from the conservative flunkies in the Republican Party.

On the issue of corporatism, he’s somewhere to their left, which to them puts him off-the-table next to the dog-dish.

Next to the dog-dish or not, I guess he figures that he’s still in the House…beats being with the rest of us in the Fieldsmore…
