On 9/11, as the rest of the world was learning of the Saudi-Wahhabist terror attack in NYC, I was taken from the federal prison factory at FCI Jesup, Georgia, and locked down incommunicado in the punitive isolation “hole” for the next 50 days.

Just business...

That was only one minor beginning of the power-security grab and the Patriot Act that was enacted by the Bush-Cheney criminal administration (and continues to this day). more…

(NOTE: The following is edited from an article posted at Truthdig by Chris Hedges, a NY Times staffer on 9/11.)

I arrived in Times Square around 9:30 on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Billows of smoke could be seen on the Jumbotrons above us pouring out of the World Trade towers.

Remembering...

I walked quickly into the NY Times newsroom, grabbed a handful of notebooks, slipped on my NYPD press card, and started down the West Side Highway to the World Trade Center.

The south tower went down around 10 a.m. with a guttural roar. Huge rolling gray clouds of noxious smoke, dust, gas, pulverized concrete, gypsum and the grit of human remains enveloped lower Manhattan. The north tower collapsed about 30 minutes later. more…

When 9/11 occurred, I was working in a prison factory at FCI Jesup, Georgia. After lunch, as I was returning to the factory, 3 lieutenants stopped me and I was locked down in the hole for the next 50 days incommunicado. Never charged or accused of anything, no explanations…

By the time I got to hear of what occurred, the conspiracy theories were also running rampant…confusing the issues more than illuminating them. I suppose those who profit from 9/11 kind of like it that way…keeps the focus off themselves.

Some believe that the jets that hit the Towers were remotely guided. That the plane wreckage outside of the Pentagon was dropped there by a C-130. That United Flight 93 that went down in Pennsylvania was shot down by a US missile.

Given the power grab by the White House to enact significant martial law (Patriot Act) over America, and foment wars of retribution and profit throughout the Middle and Near East, it’s no wonder people will believe these irrationalities. more…

Osama bin Laden’s apparent demise is as good a reason as any other to revisit my own experiences with this generation’s most horrific terror attack:  9/11/2001.

As I wrote in a previous article on this site, I was working in the UNICOR prison factory at the FCI Jesup, Georgia, when the crime occurred.

After lunch and returning to my housing unity, I was met by three prison lieutenants, escorted to the Segregated Housing Unit (SHU; the “hole”), and held incommunicado for the next 50 days.  I knew practically nothing of what had happened. more…

   The following “left-wing rant” is inspired by the in-credibly “successful” right-wing rants of Glenn Beck & Co.  Somebody must be listening to these whackos…

One of the many acquaintances I’ve developed over my past 20+ years in federal prison, one I wrote a book review for, Hans Post, One man in His Time (2002), is a former decorated Waffen SS soldier who served a number of years as a prisoner of the French, Americans, and Germans after WW-II.

On first blush, Hans Post would hardly be the sort of historical figure I’d take a shine to.  Members of fascist organizations in my book would be right up there with the klan, slavers, settler-occupiers, nativists, Tea-Bagger Republicans, and other assorted flotsam of humanity.

But Hans provides a phenomenal example of where one can come from, go to, and give hope to the rest of us… more…

While I sat incommunicado in the “hole” for 50 days during 9/11, 2001, the rest of the world reckoned with the latest expression of the terror wing of Islam (as opposed to the Judaic and Christian ones).

Who profits?

(Anyone who questions the relevance of this topic to the “prison experience connection,” has been sleepwalking thru life these past 20+ years…)

I can’t wrap my mind around any overt conspiracy other than the obvious attack by the Wahhabist Saudis who pulled it off.

In any event, its “success” has gone beyond their wildest dreams–and the world’s ongoing nightmare. more…

Dateline:   9/11, 2001. FCI Jesup, Georgia. 

Walking back from the prison chow hall to my housing unit, I was met by three lieutenants.  Asked to accompany them to the central admin building “for a few brief questions,” I was soon handcuffed and placed in the SHU (Segregated Housing Unit; the “hole”).  It wasn’t quite noon.

     In the SHU, my cellmate was Alex, sharing the same incommunicado isolation for the next 50 days.  No visits, no mail, no phone, no news, no communication outside our small cell.   That’s how I’ll always remember 9/11.

We knew something had happened in NYC –a plane had crashed into a Twin Tower.  But I assumed it was a private aircraft lost in fog or something…  Information was slow and distorted, and for the most part hardly believeable.

My main problem was no visits by Jennifer Love Hewitt—however, come to think of it, she never visited anyways… more…

The UNICOR worker next to me in the prison factory was wearing his radio headphones.  On that fateful morning he exclaimed, “Hey! The news is reporting that an airplane crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City!”

Somewhat later, he shouted, “Hey! Another airplane crashed into the Trade Center!”  Right, I said, airplanes do that all the time, dismissing his nonsense.

Finally, he practically screamed, “Hey!  I’m not kidding, the World Trade Center just collapsed!”  Now I knew it was joke-time.  more…
