Tobacco: Their Morals vs. Ours…

When I first served a particularly brutal stint on a rock-quarry, chain-gang in Tennessee (1964-65), one of the benefits I received from the state was a weekly packet of Bull Durham rolling tobacco.

It didn’t matter if the inmates smoked or not, we lined up every Friday evening at the prison store window—really not much more than a large closet—for our dole.  Tobacco was money in prison; everyone took their ration.

I was 21 and had been a smoker since I was 14.  I quit.  Who wants to burn up their own money? more…
