As I drifted out of a pleasant dream into the harsh glare of a flashlight, I heard the 3am bedcheck officer asking, “Mac, who’s your girlfriend?”

It took me a moment to process the question. Was he propositioning me? Not likely. Certainly not in a dormitory full of prisoners. His light then shown on the face of my dog. She had apparently climbed into my lower bunk with me during the night and made herself comfortable—placing her head on the pillow facing me. I could swear she was smiling. Her tail began to thump, no doubt waiting in anticipation of my verdict. more…
