While I was serving a 25-yr bit in federal prison, Peter Werbe, an editor friend of Detroit’s Fifth Estate, requested that I write a book review. He sent the book, One Man in His Time (2002), which was about the life of a former Waffen SS soldier, Hans Post.
The book documents Hans’s journey from family (his parents joined the Nazi Party in 1928 when he was 2-yrs-old), to the Hitler Youth, to his service (highly decorated), to various prisons, to mine work, union leadership, and left activism. It follows him when he his wife and daughters emigrate to Australia, where he continued his union work and activism.
Today, Hans is 86-yrs-old and the godfather of the Australian peace movement. A remarkable and surprising journey from fascism to social consciousness.
Others have had a different journey. Many works have been published documenting the collaboration between Americans, business and the Nazis…before and during the war. more…
