“Two Condoms & a Pack of Gum…”

One afternoon while assigned working a kitchen detail at FCI Jesup, a Georgia federal prison, the guard-supervisor ordered me to take the fork-lift across the compound to the warehouse to pick up a couple of pallets of frozen chickens for the next day’s meal.

(Jesup was appropriately named after the general who captured the Seminole leader, Osceola, by treachery.)

He assigned a group of sick-call inmates to unpack them into a couple of large vats with water to thaw. It’s routine practice—at least in federal prisons—to assign inmates who report to sick-call to a day’s especially punitive labor as a deterrent to shirkers and malingerers. more…
