Here & Now—1984…

When I was growing up there was a book entitled 1984, set in a distant future.  It never occurred to me that I would actually live to see that world; that such a place could even exist.

What is most unreal about 1984 is that masses of people could accept and believe the double-speak of such a leadership, manifested as Big Brother in the book.

To paraphrase the author, George Orwell (1949), “War is peace, slavery is freedom, and ignorance is strength.”   Remarkably, George projected an analog between state-capitalist Stalinism and contemporary conservative corporatism. more…
