Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention…

When Cassius Clay beat Sonny Liston for the Heavyweight Championship of the World on February 25th, 1964, I was in a prison cell in Tennessee.  I was doing time for a misdemeanor related to my civil rights activities.

I became especially aware of Malcolm X as Cassius Clay (renamed Muhammad Ali) had joined the Nation of Islam in March, just after the Liston fight.  The rematch between Ali and Liston, May 25th, 1965, didn’t last one round.

Clay/Ali was hated by many whites, especially in the South.  He was an example of the brash, young black defying the Jim Crow stereotype that still largely prevailed at the time. more…
